Court Jails Two Fraudsters Eight Years

Justice Mohammed L. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, sitting in Kaduna, has sentenced Okeke Oscar Nkem and Churchill Joshua Essien to four years in jail each for fraud related offences.

While Essien was arraigned on October 23, 2008 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on a six count charge of being in possession of document containing false pretence contrary to Section 6 and 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

Nkem was arraigned in June 2008 on a two count charge of being in possession of forged documents contrary to the same section of the Advance Fee Fraud Act.

The accused persons had pleaded not guilty to the charges and the case proceeded to full trial. The two accused persons were subsequently convicted and sentenced accordingly. While Essien bagged four years imprisonment on each of the six count charge, Nkem was sentenced to four years imprisonment on each of the two count charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.
