Africa Anti-corruption Day: Magu Charges Masses to Expose, Hold Leaders Accountable

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Mustapha Magu on Thursday, July 11, 2019, charged Nigerians to expose and hold public officials accountable for their stewardship and not to see the fight against corruption from any self serving point of view. “Unless and until Nigerians determine to expose and hold public officials accountable for their stewardship and not appreciate the fight against corruption from ethnic, political and religious perspective, the war might never be won even if battles are won.” He declared. Magu, who was represented by the Zonal Head, South East Zonal office of the EFCC, Usman Imam, stated this in an address to round off a Road Walk Against Corruption organised by the Enugu Zonal Office of Commission to commemorate the 3rd African Anti-Corruption day with the theme: “Towards a Common African Position on Asset Recovery.”

Ilorin Agog over Anti-corruption Rally

Residents of Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital on Thursday, July 11, 2019 turned out in large numbers for the commemoration of the 3rd African Anti-corruption Day organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The event which started at exactly 7:45am has in attendance, members of the National Youth Corp, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Custom Service, Federal Road Safety Corp, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, Non Governmental Organisations among others. Addressing the stakeholders, the Ilorin Zonal Head of the Commission, Mr Isyaku Sharu, urged the people to partner with the anti-graft body in the ongoing efforts to recover the stolen assets. "The high level panel on illicit financial flow shows that African Continent is losing in excess of $50 billion yearly through illicit financial outflows”, he said.

Benin Zonal Office Commemorates African Anti-corruption Day With 51 Convictions in Six Months

It was a massive turn out of stakeholders on Thursday July 11, 2019 as the Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, commemorated the 3rd African Anti-corruption Day in Benin City, Edo State. The event which had the theme, "Towards a Common African Position on Asset Recovery" was commemorated with a Road Walk which commenced at the EFCC office through Sapele Road, Ring Road, Oba Market Road, Plymouth Road, Ezoti Street before terminating at the EFCC office. Stakeholders which participated in the road walk included Civil Society Organisations, Traders' Union, members of the National Youth Service Corps and members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists. The Zonal Head, Muhtar Bello, who spoke on behalf of the Acting Chairman commended the stakeholders for identifying with the EFCC in the noble and patriotic duty. He said this year's theme was particularly important because of the need to recover and return to the good people of Africa, what has been looted and stolen out of the country by some corrupt officials. "The Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu has been working assiduously to ensure that money stolen from Nigeria are returned to the country", he said.

Nigeria Loses $50billion to Corruption Annually - Magu

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has decried the scourge of corruption in Africa, stating that the country loses over N50billion annually to illicit cash flows. Magu made this known on July 11, 2019, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State at the commemoration of the African Anti-corruption Day, with the theme, "Towards a Common African Position on Asset Recovery". Magu, who was represented by Garba Dugum, Head, Uyo Zonal Office, said the height of corruption in Africa, informed the choice of July 11 every year as the African Anti-corruption Day, by the African Union. "More than $50billion is being stolen from African continent annually. Most of these monies go on acquiring assets all over the world and we should know that tracing these assets and eventual repatriation of these assets is very difficult for a country. That is why the African nations decided to come together to fight for a cause", Magu said.
