The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's football team, EFCC FC on Sunday, 13 June, 2021 dramatically lost the 2021 FCT Aiteo Cup to NAF FC 3-1 on penalties at the Area 3 Sports Centre, Abuja. The entertaining encounter which kicked-off a few minutes after 4pm, saw both sides missing several goal scoring opportunities.
The first half was dominated by EFCC FC but they could not break down the resilient defence of the Air Force boys. However, NAF FC showed more grit at the resumption of play after the interval.
With scores remaining nil-all at the end of regulation time, the match officials opted for a penalty shootout to separate the sides.
In the ensuring shootout NAF FC converted three of their spot kicks, while EFCC FC could only convert one.
It was a dramatic end to the ambition of EFCC FC to retain the Cup they had won in 2019 at the expense of FRSC FC.
To book a place in today's final, the EFCC boys defeated FWC FC 1-0.
Though disappointed for not lifting the trophy, the players nonetheless received commendation for putting up a spirited display. The Executive Chairman EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, represented by the Director, Legal and Prosecution, Chile Okoroma, thanked the team for their fighting spirit. He urged them not to be discouraged, but to continue the good work as the commission was proud of their achievements.
In his response, the captain of the team, Icha Emmanuel thanked the Commission for its support, assuring that they will not let the commission down.
